Maintaining an Athletic Floor Surface

An important consideration in choosing an athletic surface is of course the maintenance requirements of the floor surface.

Cleaning Routine & Longevity of a Sports Floor

First of all we should note that the fundamental rule number one in maintaining any floor surface is to routinely remove surface dust and dirt, which microscopically is grit. Removing this grit from the floor will assist in maintaining a good surface appearance.

Wooden floors have to be dry mopped daily and recoated with a clear lacquer approximately twice a year. The normal lifecycle of a wooden floor is somewhere between 25 and 40 years. Traditional synthetic floorings have to be wet scrubbed daily and replaced completely after 10 to 15 years. Pulastic floors are somewhere in the middle. Typical maintenance for a Pulastic floor is to dry mop the surface every day and wet scrub it once a week. Depending on the state of the surface it can be upgraded with a face-lift treatment after approximately 15 years. In this process the surface is overpoured with 1 mm of a very strong polyurethane resin. The total lifecycle of a pulastic floor can easily be more than 25 years.

Hygienic Sports Floors

Both wooden and pulastic floors have a closed material structure on the surface which makes it very difficult for bacteria to adhere. This is of course assumes that there are no cracks in the lacquer of the wooden floor. Traditional synthetics - like P.V.C. - have a more open structure. Further do not forget that Pulastic floorings are seamless. This all gives pulastic a benefit in hygienic aspects.

Pulastic-specific Cleaner

The Pulastic system offers its own concentrated cleaner, Pulastic Mat. After heavy traffic the floor can be thoroughly cleaned by scrubbing with a stronger solution of cleaner.
